MORGAN COUNTY, Ind. – People living in a Morgan County mobile home community said their trash hasn’t been collected for weeks, although they pay a monthly fee.
Trash dumpsters at the Mooresville Mobile Home Park began filling up after a community trash compactor broke down.
“I'm getting sick and tired of living like trashy people,” said Jeff Davis. “It'll pile up so much It'll be on top of the dumpster, they'll pile it around the dumpster, they'll pile it all the way out in the middle of the street.”
Davis said the property looks and smells like a small landfill.
“An $11 fee for trash service and this is what you get. We had roaches show up, we've had rats show up,” said Elizabeth Larch. “I've had people tell me they've seen maggots over in the dump and my concern is when it does get cleaned up, where do you think the rodents are going to go to?"
Illegal dumping from outside the community has also been an issue.
Melissa Lane said her kids have not been able to play at the adjacent playground all summer due to the stench.
"The compactor is always not working,” said Lane. “There's always a horrible smell that literally just permeates the entire playground."
Management did not say how long the compactor has been broken or how long it will take to fix, but crews arrived at the property Wednesday to clean up the area.
"They'll clean it up when people get mad enough and then they let it just pile up again,” said Lane.
