Morgan Co. firefighters back from helping Hurricane Harvey victims

Posted

MORGAN COUNTY, Ind. -- Brown Township Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Stout is back from Texas with memories that will stick with him for life.

Stout and three other members of the Morgan County fire department’s water rescue team spent three days helping Hurricane Harvey victims in Orange and Beaumont, two Texas cities northeast of Houston near the Louisiana border.

The team went to Texas prepared to make water rescues.  When that wasn’t necessary, the four men handed out water bottles and checked on people who might need help.

Stout said it’s hard to describe what he saw in Texas.  “In some places we drove by, water had been up to the third story of buildings," said Stout.

Many of the people he met were “distraught” from having their homes or businesses destroyed by the winds and flooding.

David Gilkerson, Dalton Watson and Jonathon Hartsock are the other water rescue team members who went to Texas.
