MUNCIE, Ind. -- Muncie's police chief resigned his post suddenly Monday morning after nearly five years on the job.

A department spokesman said Chief Steve Stewart had handed in his resignation to the mayor early Monday.

The department did not make a public statement about Stewart's resignation available.

On Tuesday, Muncie Mayor Dennis Tyler released a brief statement about Stewart's departure:

"Chief of Police Steve Stewart submitted a letter of resignation effective immediately to my office Monday, October 31st at approximately 10am. I have accepted his letter of resignation and beginning the process of selecting a replacement as quickly as possible. Muncie is blessed with a great group of men and women who represent our Police Department professionally every day. They do a great job serving and protecting our great City 24 hours a day 365 days a year. That will not change as we go through the transition process to appoint a new Chief of Police."
