Muncie shelter bursting at seams

MUNCIE — The Muncie Mission is a popular place.

It's operating at capacity and with colder weather settling in, demand for beds is likely to grow.

It has already doubled in recent weeks.

"Never in the 88-year history of the mission have we had an increase like this," Frank Baldwin, president of the Muncie Mission, said.

Baldwin calls it a puzzling situation because, up until recently, winter weather had been on the mild side.

There are 62 beds for homeless men in the emergency shelter which opens at 4:30 p.m. on weekdays and is available all day on weekends.

Dinner and breakfast are served at the mission and a free community lunch is available.

Baldwin says the shelter never wants to turn away a person in need, so there are contingencies to deal with a full house.

Fold up mattresses are placed in hallways and in a community room.

The mission, which is funded through private donations, could use some financial help to purchase mattresses and other supplies.

Donation information is available at: or on the mission's Facebook page.
