National Weather Service confirms eight tornadoes in Central Indiana on Monday

INDIANAPOLIS -- The National Weather Service confirmed Friday that eight tornadoes hit Central Indiana Monday evening.

It was originally thought that seven tornadoes touched down, but after the NWS looked at the damage, they determined there was a brief, separate touchdown in North Hendricks County. 

Six of the tornadoes developed from one storm that moved northeast through Hendricks, Boone, Hamilton, Tipton and Howard counties.

Two additional storms produced single tornados in Avon and Tippecanoe County, northwest of Lafayette.

The strongest tornado touched down in Whitestown with an estimated peak wind speed of 115 mph. It also had the longest path at 3.8 miles and 150 yards wide.

Tornadoes in Clayton and Sheridan had an estimated peak wind speed of 105 mph.

Tornadoes in Avon and Brownsburg had an estimated peak wind speed of 95 mph.

The estimated peak wind speed of the tornado in Tippecanoe County was 85 mph.

Tornadoes in Hendricks and Howard Counties had an estimated peak wind speed of 80 mph.
