INDIANAPOLIS – Neighbors on Indy’s north side expressed concern about a new development set to build near the Fashion Mall at Keystone.
People living in the area said the retail complex that may go up at the northwest corner of 86th Street and Keystone Avenue could cause many problems as it will likely bring more traffic to the already congested area.
"There is too much office space in the city already,” said Elizabeth Mohoney, president of the Indiana Forest Alliance Board. “Castleton is full of empty space. Keystone at the Crossing is rife with retail. We do not need more retail. The community needs and deserves some open space. We're losing touch with nature. We need to embrace nature as opposed to paving it over."
The developer, Keystone Realty Group, proposed a $20 million complex with over 60,000 square-feet in retail space, but some in the community said they care more about the wildlife than the traffic jams.
"I see the wildlife, and the wildlife comes over and sees me,” said Dave Knight, Driftwood Hills resident. “There are often deer and coyotes. We have two cats and we have to be careful we don't let the cats out because the coyote will use them as bait."
The project’s hearing was set for this month, but it will likely continue June 21. Keystone Realty scheduled a meeting with members of the Driftwood neighborhood May 25 at the Church of the Crossing beginning at 6:30 p.m.
