INDIANAPOLIS -- Mayor-Elect Joe Hogsett has a plan to add more streetlights to Indianapolis – but a group of neighbors aren't waiting until he takes office.
Samantha DeWester didn't want to wait to see if the city could find the funds once Hogsett takes office. Instead, she paid a one-time cost of $130, and $6 a month, to get IPL to install one in her neighborhood.
"It's a lot brighter at night," she said. "It illuminates the entire block."
DeWester obtained the light for her neighborhood through an IPL program. The utility says it's standing by with more lights ready to roll.
"We'll have someone come out to your home, help assess the needs and figure out what's the best lighting for your area," said IPL's Brandi Davis-Handy.
IPL said the $6 monthly fee is added to the utility bill of the customer that requests the additional light.
