New map predicts crashes on Indiana roadways

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indiana State Police has a new tool that may make it easier for you to avoid traffic headaches on the road.

The Daily Crash Prediction map predicts, within the current three-hour time window, when and where a crash may happen. Users can also select an alternate time period for that same day. Click here to check it out.

The map uses different colors to indicate the probability of a crash occurring on that date and at that time.

Blue indicates a low probability, yellow a moderate probability, and red indicates a high probability. You can also see a history of crashes in a certain area as you zoom in.

Officials with ISP say the Daily Crash Prediction map will also help them with proactive policing, targeted toward a reduction in crashes and fatalities.

"We want them to look at this and say, 'maybe I need to go another way, maybe I need to watch it, maybe I need to put that phone down,'" said ISP Capt. Larry Jenkins. "We want them to do that anyway."

Indiana has 200,00 crashes a year, according to ISP. If accidents are reduced by 2,000 it would save Hoosiers $35 million dollars a year.
