INDIANAPOLIS -- A police pursuit ended with a suspect shot by officers Monday near the Marion-Johnson County line.
The incident began when a Greenwood police officer tried to pull over a black BMW on State Road 135 in Greenwood. Instead of pulling over, the driver of the BMW ran from the officer, triggering a chase. The BMW hit four cars during the chase.
The pursuit ended around 6 p.m. near the intersection of Shelby Street and Stop 11 Road.
Greenwood police say the suspect, later identified as Paul Kinnaman, climbed out of the passenger-side window of his vehicle and pointed his gun at police. He reportedly pulled the trigger, but the gun malfunctioned and did not fire.
Officers then fired upon Kinnaman, striking him once. He surrendered after being shot.
Five total people were taken to the hospital as a result of the chase: Kinnaman, two people in the BMW and two people in vehicles that were struck by the suspect, police said.
Kinnaman was in surgery Monday night, but was listed in stable condition on Tuesday.
Police said he is a convicted felon out on parole.
Kinnaman was sentenced to 42 years and but that was modified to a little more than three years by the court.
The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave pending investigation, per police policy.
