INDIANAPOLIS—One person is dead and two others injured following a police chase early Wednesday evening on the Indianapolis west side.

According to Major Harold Turner of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the chase began near North Belleview Place and West Ohio Street when an IMPD officer attempted to pull over a vehicle for a traffic violation, but the car took off.

Turner says the officer chased the car with lights flashing, but two minutes into the chase, noticed the driver was driving erratically.

"So the officer, making an excellent judgment decision, shut his emergency equipment off in hopes that this individual would slow down and start driving normally," said Turner.

But, about two miles from where the chase began, the officer came upon the crash scene at West Michigan Street and North Grande Avenue after the other driver lost control.

Police say the suspect vehicle came to rest on its side, with one person dead and two others, a man and woman, injured.

After the crash, police discovered the car had been stolen on Tuesday.

Police are trying to figure out if the man who died was the driver or one of the passengers.
