INDIANAPOLIS — The City of Indianapolis announced the expansion of the program 'Safe Saturdays' with a new program called 'Safe Summer,' which continues the mission of reducing violence among the city's youth.
Mayor Joe Hogsett helped to kick off the first night of 'Safe Summer' at Frederick Douglass Park on the north side Friday along with the Director of Community Violence Reduction, Shonna Majors.
Safe Saturdays, first announced in June, will fund safe and productive activities for youth ages 13 and older at Indy Parks from July 5 to August 10.
Programs include a host of fun-filled activities, but also provides self-improvement sessions, such as:
- Open mic nights
- Basketball and kickball
- Kickbacks (chill gathering spots)
- Games of pool and foosball
- Video and board games
- Conflict resolution workshops
- Personal hygiene trainings
- Movie nights
- Boxing lessons
- Guest speakers
- End of summer dance
- Pool days
- BBQs
Every week Safe Summer will have special events at the following locations:

The programs are provided at no additional cost to taxpayers, due to a $10,000 donation from the Central Indiana Community Foundation and continued contributions from community partners, according to the city.
