INDIANAPOLIS -- A blood drive to benefit some recent Bishop Chatard High School graduates injured in a crash overwhelmed a local Blood Mobile.

The drive was organized by Broad Ripple Masonic Lodge 643 after the crash that happened on I-74 east of Shelbyville on Thursday.  Three of the five teens who were injured are still in the hospital.  “It’s tragic timing, but glad that we were able to make it close for people to respond and be part of our response," said Doug Eckhart with the Masonic Lodge.

Within a few minutes, the Blood Mobile at the Lodge was at capacity, and people wishing to give blood were sent to other blood banks in the area.  "I understood that the kids needed a lot of blood and just really the only thing that I could do to help the family," said Kristie Cheek, a parent of a student at Bishop Chatard.
