Pair of brothers working to revitalize Garfield Park

INDIANAPOLIS -- A pair of brothers and former state lawmakers with deep roots in Indianapolis are working to improve the neighborhood they call home.

Ed and Louis Mahern are the fourth generation of their family to call Garfield Park home.

They've seen a lot of changes in the time they've been here, but they want to be a part of the transformation to help the neighborhood prosper.

The former state representative and former state senator point to challenges in Garfield Park, including empty businesses and a few vacant houses.

A home on Tabor Street sat empty for 14 years before the brothers bought it last year. It was their second project on the block. A house across the street will be their third.

"We live here," Louis Mahern said. "It's not like we're in Greenwood and investing money. Both of us live within two blocks of this property. We grew up here. We want to see the neighborhood prosper."

The Mahern brothers share a vision of what they think the neighborhood could look like moving forward, and they're hoping it spreads.
