Parents charged for not sending kids to school

MUNCIE, Ind. -- A crackdown on parents not sending their children to school in Muncie comes just as winter break is over.

Muncie Community Schools sent parents letters when their child missed five to fifteen days. At least three did not respond, and did not show up for scheduled conferences with administrators. The Delaware County prosecutor then got involved.

On Tuesday, three parents were charged with felony neglect of a dependent.

While school administrators hope that parents of children chronically absent now get their kids to school, prosecutors say that if that doesn't happen, there will be more arrests.

Muncie Community Schools say that the parents arrested have kids at Southside Middle School.

Chronically absent kids make up five to ten percent of the district's population.
