INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis park ranger was arrested Sunday for operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Police received several 911 calls about a reckless driver in the area of Rockville and Raceway Roads on the city's west side.

The first officer to arrive on the scene saw a gray car stopped in the middle of the road, and the driver was trying to fight with people who were standing around the car.

Paul Berninger, 45, was arrested.

Officers discovered that Berninger works for IMPD as a park ranger.

He was off-duty at the time of his arrest and was not driving an IMPD vehicle.

IMPD Chief Troy Riggs is recommending that Berninger be fired. As a civilian employee, his status is not reviewed by the IMPD Merit Board.
