New parking restrictions coming to Broad Ripple

INDIANAPOLIS -- Parking is about to become a bit more complicated in Broad Ripple.

The Indianapolis Department of Public Works announced Tuesday that the Broad Ripple Area Traffic Plan will begin sometime in June.

The plan is a pilot program created in coordination with Broad Ripple Village Association, and neighborhood input, "to improve motorist and pedestrian safety in the Broad Ripple area," according to a release from DPW.

The following changes will take place in what's labeled as Zone 1 of Broad Ripple (see map of affected roads below):

  • The installation of “No Parking Here to Corner” signs, which will provide parking restrictions up to 30 feet at intersections.
  • Removal of various parking lanes near residential areas in Zone 1.
  • The addition of all-way stop signs at the following intersections: Paxton Place and Guilford Avenue; Carrollton Avenue and 60th Street.
  • Improvements to alleys to make them passable and usable by residents so they can access their garages and parking pads and no longer have to use the street for parking

The BRVA says the common idea, for many years, has been "remove visitors and employees from parking on residential streets and restore order and safety to the area."

The association said they surveyed residents about a parking permit plan, but only 44.5 percent of survey respondents wanted a program like that.

The BRVA and DPW said they will monitor the changes for 6-9 months and seek public input as to the affect of the changes.
