MUNCIE, Ind. -- A 26-year-old man was shot and killed Friday night in an apparent officer-involved shooting in Muncie – the city's third fatal shooting this week.

The Delaware County Coroner's Office has identified him as Storm Allen Smith, 26.

The shooting happened around 8:30 p.m. near State Road 32 and the Muncie Bypass.

Muncie police said an officer was called to the area on a report of a threat.

When the officer arrived, Smith took off on foot. The officer chased him, eventually resulting in a physical altercation.

At some point during that fight, police said, the officer drew his weapon and fatally shot Smith.

The officer was taken to the hospital to receive treatment for injuries sustained during the fight.

The shooting is the third fatal incident in the city this week.
