"IRS" phone scammers are back

Posted

GREENWOOD, Ind. -- The scammers claiming to be from the IRS are back.

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office says a woman from Greenwood received a voicemail from an automated recording claiming to be from the IRS.  The recording stated that it was a final attempt to contact the woman and that a lawsuit would subsequently be filed.

The caller ID indicated the number was from Seattle, Washington.  The woman did not return the call, and the sheriff's office again wants to remind people that the IRS does not call taxpayers to collect debts, nor does it initiate calls for any kind of business.  IRS collections are only handled through the mail.

If you receive such a call, you should report it to your local law enforcement agency.
