MUNCIE, Ind. -- The first draft of a plan to rehabilitate the Muncie Fieldhouse was unveiled Tuesday night.
District leaders in Muncie say their message is clear: the Fieldhouse isn't going anywhere.
The building is where eight state championships have been earned. And it's where thousands of people have played volleyball and basketball.
The off-the-court issues have kept sections of the Fieldhouse out of play recently.
In the 1930s, the ground where the Fieldhouse now sits started to deteriorate. City leaders say that's what's causing problems again today.
The Fieldhouse also needs to be brought up to 21st Century standards – that means potentially adding an elevator and air conditioning.
Muncie Community Schools is now teaming up with city leaders to create a plan that could make the Fieldhouse the anchor to the downtown revitalization project.
The next step, of course, will be to figure out how to pay for it.
