Officials said the two people onboard were 70-year-old flying instructor Ronald McCormick and a 17-year-old student.
McCormick, who was piloting the plane, said something went wrong in the air and he had to take the plane down in Zionsville.
He then ran out to County Road 1200 East to stop a driver and ask her to call 911.
Both McCormick and his student were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The FAA and NTSB were investigating the cause of the crash.
