BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A Bloomington woman who claimed she was sexually assaulted by an armed intruder in November lied to police about the incident, investigators now say.
On Nov. 17, a 22-year-old resident at the Brownstone Terrace Apartments near Indiana University's campus reported an armed intrusion and sexual assault. She told police a man knocked on her door, forced his way inside at gunpoint and sexually assaulted her in her bedroom.
The woman gave police a description of the suspect, which they used to produce a composite sketch.
After the sketch was released, Bloomington police say a man came forward and said he believed he was the individual described by the woman.
The man told police he had been with the woman on the night of the reported event, but that things had not transpired as she reported. The man said there had been a dispute over money, and he believed the reported rape was made in retaliation for the monetary dispute and other issues between the two.
Police said the man was able to provide text messages to support his claim.
In a subsequent interview with the woman, police said she admitted her original story was "inaccurate"
Bloomington Police Captain Joe Qualters said the woman has provided three different accounts of how the incident allegedly occurred, and is "somewhat evasive regarding the reported monetary dispute."
It wasn't immediately clear whether the woman would face any charges.
