INDIANAPOLIS — A crackdown by local police departments on impaired and aggressive driving produced results in March.

A report from the Marion County Traffic Safety Partnership said police departments from Indianapolis, Speedway, Beech Grove and IUPUI issued 5,629 traffic citations and made 21 arrests during Operation Pull Over Aggressive Driving from March 1-24.

Approximately 230 police agencies across Indiana participated in the program, which is funded through National Highway Traffic Safety Administration grants administered by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute.

Impaired driving includes usage of alcohol, prescription drugs and illegal drugs before getting behind the wheel, while aggressive driving tactics, such as following too closely and unsafe lane movement violations, are among the top causes of crashes.
