Police shoot robbery suspect in buttocks

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis police shot a robbery suspect in the buttocks Thursday following an early morning search.

The shooting happened around 12:45 a.m. on the 1400 block of Panama Avenue on the city's west side.

Police fired one shot. No officers were injured in the shooting.

The encounter started as a report of an armed robbery at a gas station on the 6800 block of West Washington Street.

Officers were already in the area on the report of a 17-year-old runaway who had taken a gun from his home.

Officers on the scene of the runaway heard the description of the armed robbery suspect and recognized that it was possibly the armed runaway they were looking for, according to a press release from IMPD. 

Officer responded to the gas station, where two men were seen running from the scene. The officers split up. One officer chased the juvenile suspect and the other officer chased a second suspect, later identified as Miguel Duran-Vasquez, 18. 

 

The officer chasing the juvenile saw him reach for his waistband. The officer told the suspect to drop the weapon and show his hands, according to the release from IMPD. The officer then shot him. The suspect was taken into custody and given medical attention. He was taken to Eskenazi in serious, but stable condition. A black gun was located within reach of him, according to IMPD. 

The officer involved in the shooting is an 11-year veteran and will be placed on administrative leave, as is standard protocol.

A perimeter was set up an K9 units searched the area for the second suspect. The suspect was found in a creek bed behind the 1400 block of Panama Avenue, and was arrested without incident.

Surveillance video from the gas station showed the juvenile, wearing a gray sweatshirt, pointing a gun at the cashier and taking money from the registered. The second suspect had cash on him, which was later determined to be from the robbery. He also allegedly had marijuana on him. 

The juvenile has been charged with robbery, possession of a firearm without a license, and resisting law enforcement. The second suspect has been charged with robbery, possession of marijuana, and resisting law enforcement.
