Police warn parents about pool pervs

Posted

GREENWOOD, Ind. -- Year after year officials tell parents to keep their eye on their kids around the water, but this year officials also want you to be on the lookout for suspicious activity at your local pool.

Alice Cronin says her son could spend every day at a Greenwood water park.

"I can leave my children here during the day, and they're safe," Cronin said.

She feels safe with lifeguards on duty and security cameras that are monitored by police.

"You hear all the time about kids just randomly being picked up by people they don't know, so they're very watchful around here," Cronin said.

So far, there aren't any reports of that sort of thing, but Assistant Police Chief Matthew Fillenworth says parents at any pool should be alert.

"They're like con men," Fillenworth said. "They want to gain your confidence and your child's confidence so they can get access to your child."

Fillenworth says there is no law in Indiana that keeps sex offenders away from public pools, but in Greenwood there is a city ordinance that bans convicted sex offenders from city parks.

State law also says convicted sex offenders must stay at least a thousand feet from schools and places that conduct educational programs for children.

Police say if you do notice a suspicious person in an area where children are playing, you should call law enforcement immediately.
