Preparing your family, home for potential flooding

INDIANAPOLIS – Heavy rain hit the west side of Indianapolis hard last weekend, and homeowners are preparing for potential flooding later this week.

StormTeam 6’s Todd Klaassen said rain chances will increase for the area.

"Everybody is going to see 1 to 3 inches of rain,” said Klaassen. “There could be isolated areas where it could get up to 4 inches total. Unlike last weekend, the high totals were spotty. This is going to be pretty widespread rain for us."

Last weekend’s rain left Duane Judd’s home with 10 inches of water in the crawl space because his sump pump stopped working.

“It was kind of good timing,” said Judd. “I already had Acculevel coming out to do some work, including replacing my sump pump.”

Judd’s new sump pump costs about $1,100 and Acculevel said they’ve had about 120 appointments this week from those who want to secure their homes against the weather.

The American Red Cross suggests creating a plan with your family before chances of potential flooding. Officials also said families should have access to NOAA radio broadcasts and to be sure insurance policies and other valuables are kept in a safety deposit box.
