Public forum will ask for citizen input on placement of new streetlights in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS -- Over 100 new streetlights have been installed since Mayor Joe Hogsett took office, but the city is looking for input on where the next ones should go.

A forum is scheduled for later this week to gather those ideas.

Residents living in the 2100 block of Coil Street plan to attend that meeting.

William Kelly lives on Coil Street. When the sun goes down, there's no illumination on his street, except porch lights from houses. The closest streetlights to him are nearly two blocks away on Michigan Road.

"I got hit in my driveway once,” said Kelly. “The girl couldn’t see me. No lights.”

Not only is it dangerous to move around, but the lack of streetlights also causes a crime issue in certain neighborhoods.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department says crime gravitates to areas in the city that are darker

That's why the city wants your input on where new streetlights need to go up. The forum is scheduled for Wednesday at the Wayne Township Government Center at 6:30 p.m.

There is currently no timetable for when the new streetlights will be installed.
