PUTNAM COUNTY, Ind. – More than 100 cartons of cigarettes were found Friday in a vehicle during a traffic stop on I-70 in Putnam County.
An Indiana State Police trooper stopped a 2003 Nissan Maxima for following too closely, and soon after found 109 cartons of cigarettes without Indiana tax stamps in the trunk of the vehicle.
Under Indiana law, no one can possess more than 1,500 cigarettes without the required tax stamps.
The cartons were seized and the driver, 18-year-old Donovan Jackson of Ruffsdale, Pennsylvania and his 55-year-old passenger, Frank E. Spillar of Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania were transported to the Putnam County Jail.
Jackson and Spillar were preliminarily charged with one count each of tobacco tax violation.
