Malala Yousafzai speaks at DePauw University

Posted

GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The youngest person awarded the Nobel Peace Prize spoke at DePauw University Monday about a life-changing experience she hopes inspires others to act.

Thousands of people gathered to hear Malala Yousafzai speak, the woman who survived an attempted assassination by the Taliban in 2012 when the group tried to stop her and other girls from going to school.

During the attack the group asked for Yousafzai by name, then shot her in the head, neck and shoulder because she publicly spoke out against the Taliban and campaigned for girls’ education.

“She's amazing,” said freshman Daniela Chaparro. “It's not very often that someone like her comes along and it's amazing that we get to experience (her) firsthand.”

She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize at 17 years old in 2014.

"I realized the power of my voice, but I also realized the importance of education for women. They have tried all their best and they still will not stop me,” said Yousafzai.

In April, Yousafzai launched a 6-month trip for girls.
