INDIANAPOLIS — People interested in the intersection between race and housing can watch the United Way of Central Indiana's Virtual Education Series titled "Understanding the Roots of Racism" on Tuesday evening.

The second installment of the four-part series will begin at 5 p.m. WRTV is a partner with the United Way on the series.

A half-century has passed since the passage of the federal Fair Housing Act that abolished redlining, but recent reports from the Fair Housing Center of Central Indiana show significant levels of discrimination against African Americans today.

The presentation's speakers will help educate on the history of discriminatory practices as they relate to purchasing, renting and buying homes in Central Indiana, how city planning has often displaced Black neighbors, the laws created over the years to protect people of color and what needs to be done to create equal opportunities for all homeowners.

WRTV will stream Tuesday's presentation on Facebook, Twitter and wrtv.com.

The series will continue on Sept. 16 when food and hunger issues are discussed, and conclude on Oct. 21 when presenters discuss issues surrounding race and transportation.
