BOONE COUNTY, Ind. -- A recovering heroin addict has been clean for years, and he blames part of that on a sobering billboard he once saw along the interstate.
Now, Scott Mitchell is trying to bring that same message to his friends and neighbors in Boone County. He wants to put a billboard along I-65 between Boone County and Indianapolis. He said it is the route he used to take when he went into the city to get his drugs.
He wants the billboard to include a picture of a casket with a caption that reads, "One way to stop using heroin. Call Scott Mitchell. He can help."
Mitchell says it is usually death or jail. For him, it was the latter. He says he was arrested 12 times before he knew he had to commit to recovery. Now, he's been sober for more than two years and has found purpose in efforts like his billboard campaign, trying to steer others toward recovery.
"The actual user will be able to see this, this billboard and my hopes or my vision is that somebody that really wants help will see this billboard and with it being so powerful you know, it will maybe make them think a little bit," Mitchell said.
Mitchell needs at least $1,300 to print the billboard and display it for at least a month. Right now he has stalled at close to $500.
