Retired fireman gifts $16K to Wounded Warriors

Posted

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Christmas spirit was alive and well on the far-south side of Indianapolis this week.

Thanks to a retired Indianapolis firefighter, a disabled American veteran will get a new life of mobility.

That firefighter, Bob Lowe, donated $16,000 to the Wounded Warrior Project to pay for a track chair.

The chair will be constructed to meet the specific needs of a yet-to-be-named veteran. The only caveat Lowe made with his donation is that the chair go to a Hoosier vet.

"Back when I grew up, I was so damn poor, I didn't know what to eat next," Lowe said. "But I've been working all these years and I've been saving it. And now I've got the money."

Lowe said his inspiration to donate the money came from his family. His father, brothers and granddaughters have all served in the military.

Lowe himself spent nearly 30 years as an Indianapolis firefighter.
