INDIANAPOLIS — Organizers with Pack Away Hunger have canceled the 8th annual Pack Friday event that had been set to take place on Friday.

Organizers set the cancellation was based on the rise of COVID-19 cases and restrictions on large events.

Pack Friday is an opportunity that gives hundreds of volunteers an opportunity to pack meals for local families in need.

"While we're sad to cancel Pack Friday, the safety of our volunteers and staff is our priority," Abigail Harlan, executive director of Pack Away Hunger, said. "Our immediate concern is that we won't be able to create the 70,000 meals we had planned to pack. Those meals were slated to be delivered to local food pantries in the coming weeks."

The organization is requesting donations so that the meals can still be created. Through Friday, the organization is offering a gift bag to donors who contribute more than $100 to the Pack Friday campaign. The gift bag includes a Pack Away Hunger t-shirt and a bottle of wine from Mallow Run Winery in Bargersville.

"Since Pack Friday was scheduled to be held at Mallow Run Winery, we wanted to give our supporters a way to still create meals and have a taste of the Mallow Run experience," Harlan said. "We're eager to host meal packs again, but until that time donations are the most effective way to make sure we get these meals to families in need."
