INDIANAPOLIS — A chase involving Lawrence police officers ended in a police-involved shooting on the northeast side Tuesday afternoon.

Lawrence Assistant Police Chief Gary Woodruff says officers from his department were chasing a van with two suspects from a shoplifting incident at a clothing store on Pendleton Pike.

The pursuit came to an end just inside Indianapolis on East 56th Street at the Interstate 465 interchange when the vehicle being chased went off the road.

There, according to Woodruff, a Lawrence officer shot and wounded an adult male suspect as he ran from the van. Late Tuesday, his condition was described as "critical-but-stable," by Woodruff. The second suspect, also an adult male, was not wounded and was arrested.

Woodruff says police were not shot at by the suspects and he wasn't sure if either man was armed. He says both suspects had outstanding warrants, one for cocaine possession and one for a probation violation.

Lawrence Police Department investigators will file a report with the Marion County Prosecutor and the two officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave, as is department policy.

Woodruff says the officers were wearing body cameras and the police cars have cameras. Video will be reviewed as part of the investigation.

Woodruff says his department should have an update on the investigation around midday on Wednesday.
