PLAINFIELD, Ind. -- Shots were fired early Friday morning at a sign leading into the Islamic Society of North America's complex in Plainfield.

Plainfield police confirm they are investigating.

The damage to the sign comes after vandals spray-painted slurs on the building in late February.

The fear is this incident may be in response to the attack in Orlando that left 49 people dead by a man claiming allegiance to ISIS.

"A lot of times during these tragic incidents, we do see a backlash on the Muslim community. We see a lot of cheap political points being gained and I think that sort of fuels people's fears and anxieties," said Faryal Khatri, Islamic Society of North America.

The Islamic Society says they've been the target of harassing social media posts and emails since the Orlando shootings.
