SOUTHPORT, Ind. -- A Southport police officer became the first member of his department to administer Narcan to a suspected overdose victim last week.
On Saturday, Officer Ryan Bowersox was on patrol when he spotted two individuals inside a vehicle at a gas station not pumping gas.
Suspecting the individuals of being under the influence of narcotics, Bowersox asked to search the vehicle, for which he received consent.
Inside the car, Bowersox found nine hypodermic needles and two pipes.
While he began reading the two their rights, a woman in the car became lethargic and unresponsive.
Bowersox administered a sternum rub, but the woman did not respond. Believing she was overdosing, he then administered a dose of Narcan.
Bowersox was the first Southport police officer to administer Narcan since the anti-overdose drug was donated to the department by the Lions Club of Southport late last year.
