Street painter wants you to brake for art

Posted

INDIANAPOLIS -- Speed bumps, roundabouts and stop lights are all proven ways to slow traffic – but will drivers brake for art?

That's what street artist Peter Gibson hopes will happen when you see his latest work.

Gibson says his art isn't like a traditional painting that you would stand in front of and look at. With his art, you need to interact with it.

Jim Walker, of Big Car Collaborative – a non-profit arts organization based in Garfield Park – believes these colorful and whimsical pieces will remind people the streets are a public space.

It's a method that has been used in other cities across the country, and now Indianapolis will give it a test drive.

Most of the artwork right now is painted on the south side of the city. You can see it on Pleasant Run Parkway Drive and Garfield Drive.
