Suspect arrested in hit-and-run that killed a bicyclist

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis police arrested a suspect Friday evening after he killed a bicyclist during a hit-and-run accident.

Just before 7 p.m. on Friday officers responded to an accident on the 2100 block of S. East Street involving a personal injury and hit-and-run crash.

Officers found a 60-year-old James Nielsen Jr. had been struck by a vehicle.

Nielsen was declared deceased at the scene.

The driver, 24-year-old Joshua Stephens was located a short time after the crash thanks to the public and quick actions of officers.

Stephens was transported to Eskenazi Hospital for blood draw, a standard procedure in fatality accidents.

He was then arrested with preliminary charges including Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated Causing Death and Failure to Stop at an Accident Resulting in Death.
