INDIANAPOLIS -- A suspect shot by Indianapolis police Thursday tried to rob a house on the city's east side last year, but he was stopped by a sword-wielding woman.
Officers say they received information from Johnson County investigators about a possible stolen vehicle with an armed suspect in the area.
Police located a vehicle matching the description at the intersection of Union and Regent Streets around 6 p.m. Thursday night.
The suspect fled on foot when confronted, but officers caught up him and told him to get on the ground.
Police say they fired at the suspect when he showed a gun and raised it toward them. He was hit at least one time.
The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Jacob Wessel of Indianapolis, was taken to the hospital in serious condition.
No officers were injured. Those involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave, pending the conclusion of an investigation, per IMPD policy.
Wessel faces preliminary charges of auto theft, firearms, possession of narcotics and resisting law enforcement.
He's also the same man who was held by woman with a Japanese-style sword after he robbed her house last October.
Karen Dolley said she heard an intruder in her east side home and confronted him. Dolley said she punched Wessel at least ten times then grabbed her sword to hold him until police arrived.
Wessel pled guilty to that crime in December 2015.
