INDIANAPOLIS -- A person suspected of shooting at police on the northeast side Thursday was found dead following a SWAT standoff.

Officers were dispatched around 2:30 p.m. to the intersection of 36th and Denny streets.

When they arrived on the scene, police saw some damage to the front door and surrounding homes which appeared to have come from gunfire.

Officers talked with the person inside the home and asked him to come out, but he refused.

They tried to enter the house and heard a gunshot.

The officers backed off and SWAT was called in.

SWAT officers attempted negotiation, then deployed tear gas into the home. They also sent a robot in, to no avail.

Ultimately, officers entered the home to find the suspect dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Indianapolis Metro police have not yet said what led to the SWAT situation.
