Taylor University cancels Turkey trip after bomb

UPLAND, Ind. (AP) -- Taylor University has canceled a student trip to Turkey in the wake of a suicide bombing in Istanbul that killed 10 tourists.

Students and faculty in the school's biblical studies department were supposed to leave Thursday for Turkey. But their trip was canceled amid safety concerns following Tuesday's deadly bombing blamed on a man affiliated with the Islamic State group.

The trip's participants were slated to visit Turkish sites mentioned in the New Testament's Book of Revelation.

Biblical studies department chair Michael Harbin says everyone who signed up for the trip was "extremely disappointed, but understood the reason for the decision." He hopes the trip can be rescheduled for next January.

Taylor University is an evangelical Christian liberal arts school in Upland, about 50 miles southeast of Fort Wayne.
