HANCOCK COUNTY, Ind. -- A Hancock County teen was killed and two others were injured in an accident involving farm equipment and a pickup truck Wednesday afternoon.
The accident happened around 1:30 p.m. near the intersection of CR 900 N and CR 750 E. Investigators said Riley Settergren was in a pick-up truck when a farmer driving a crop sprayer crept out past the stop sign while looking for traffic. Officials said his vision was blocked by the cornfield when the crash happened.
The Hancock County Sheriff's Department said Settergren was killed in the accident.
According to Eastern Hancock Schools, two other students were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Settergren was set to start his senior year in one week. He was on the football, track and wrestling teams.
"You couldn't classify him as this group or that group," said Eastern Hancock High School Principal David Pfaff. "He was just really popular throughout a lot of different kids."
Some students said they were shocked when they heard the news.
"I just thought it was unreal. My heart sank, didn't know if it was real," said friend of Settergren, Dakota Linton.
Eastern Hancock Schools released a statement about the deaths saying they will be opening their facilities Wednesday evening and will have extra counselors on hand for any students that need them.
"We have been notified that some of our students were involved in a serious automobile accident this afternoon. Riley Settergren was fatally injured. Two other students were taken to Methodist Hospital but are not believed to have life-threatening injuries. We are opening school facilities now for anyone who wishes to be here and have brought in extra counselors to help. Please enter the building at the Varsity Locker Room doors. We will keep you informed when there is more to share."
