MADISON COUNTY, Ind. -- A Knightstown student died following a head-on crash Thursday afternoon in Madison County.

Dylan Hiner, varsity basketball player at Knightstown High School, was pronounced dead at St. Vincent Hospital after he was involved in the accident on State Road 38, just east of County Road 150 W. between Pendleton and Markleville.

Students and staff gathered Thursday night to remember 17-year-old Hiner inside the school gym.

"You know people are shocked. This is a terrible loss," said Superintendent of the Charles A. Beard Memorial School Corporation, Jediah Behny. "Dylan was just a popular kid..I'm not sure what his next basketball steps were, but if you'd have asked him he probably would've said he'd be in the NBA one day."

Investigators with the Madison County Sheriff's Department believe Hiner's vehicle veered across the center line and struck an eastbound vehicle.

The 56-year-old male driver of the eastbound vehicle was taken to St. Vincent to be checked out, but is expected to be okay.

The school plans to have additional staff on hand in the coming weeks for students who may need assistance.
