INDIANAPOLIS -- It is time to start using ten digits. The transition to start including the area code when making local calls in Indianapolis started Friday.
The push comes just six months before the state is expected to start introducing numbers a second area code to the region.
Adding the area code to all 317 region calls to make way for the new 463 area code is being encouraged to all callers. Starting in mid-September, you must use 10 digit dialing for all local phone calls. If you do not, your call will not be completed.

That means you should start making sure that all of your preprogrammed numbers like your cell phone contacts or voicemail are set to include the area code.
Your phone number, including the current area code, will not change.
But in mid-October, numbers assigned for new phone lines in the 317 region may include the new 463 area code.
