You hope you'll never need to use it, but Text-to-911 is now available in all 92 counties in Indiana.

About one month ago, the only counties that didn't have the service were: Lake, Newton, Jasper, Hendricks, Randolph, Union, Greene and Vanderburg.

All those counties now have the capability to receive 911 messages, according to in911.net.

Marion County added the ability to receive 911 texts in October 2015.

Dispatchers will still prefer anybody with an emergency to call instead of text.

"We want descriptions. We want a lot more information than you’re going to be able to provide in a text. So, it's always better, it's always faster that we get a phone call,” Lt. Col. Bart McAtee with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office said in October.
