Theatre on the Square faces financial hardship, plans to temporarily close in September

INDIANAPOLIS – A Mass Ave theater plans to close its doors temporarily due to financial limitations.

Theatre on the Square, which has been part of the Mass Ave neighborhood since 1993 when it relocated from Fountain Square, is in need of repairs and plans to close in September.

Organization officials said they plan to partner with the Central Indiana Community Foundation to create a long-term plan to sustain the building. The current plan is to shut down the theatre from September through the end of 2017.

“We are optimistic about the future. This is not the end of theater at 627 Massachusetts Avenue; this is merely the end of Act One,” said Roger Schmelzer, TOTS board president.

Theatre on the Square originally opened in 1988.
