NEW WHITELAND, Ind. -- A brazen thief broke into at least a dozen unlocked cars in New Whiteland – stealing plenty, but leaving behind a key piece of evidence.

Police say the thief's M.O. is hitting unlocked cars and taking items like change or chargers.

But this week, the thief was caught in camera in the act.

The video shows the man light up a cigarette. He then tosses it on his way out – unknowingly helping police by providing his DNA.

Authorities believe the man is possibly looking for narcotics, as he's left expensive items like cameras untouched. In one case he dumped a high schooler's homework in to the street, but took the backpack.

Anyone with information about the break-ins is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
