INDIANAPOLIS -- Three people were killed in the wintry mix that left roads ice-covered and caused hundreds of crashes in Indiana over the weekend.
One person died as a result of a multi-vehicle crash around midnight on northbound I-65, according to Indiana State Police. The victim of that crash has been identified as Kiara Aguilar, 16, of Indianapolis.
Police found the second victim's 2000 Chevrolet pickup truck shortly after midnight on westbound I-70 near Shadeland Avenue. There was extensive damage to the driver's side of the pickup. However, any other vehicles that were involved in the crash had already left the scene. The victim, Rueben Cordova De La Cruz, was taken to the hospital where he later died.
The third victim was killed overnight Friday in a crash on I-65 near the 106 mile marker. State police say a passenger was ejected from a vehicle and taken to the hospital where they were pronounced dead. The person's name has not been released. Police are still waiting to speak with the driver.
Several parts of I-465, I-65 and I-70 were shut down due to the high number of crashes and slick conditions over the weekend. At one point firefighters had to evacuate residents off of an overpass on I-465 after they were stranded there for hours.
State Police say 259 vehicles that were abandoned on the interstates and other roads were removed by tow trucks throughout the day on Saturday. Some of them had been involved in crashes, but others were left at the side of the road because of the icy conditions.
The roads were so bad late Friday night and early Saturday morning that first responders began walking on foot to check vehicles and respond to crashes.
Between 8 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. Sunday, Indiana State Police District 52 dispatchers fielded 1091 emergency 911 calls, a majority of those related to accidents caused by the icy road conditions. The district is made up of Marion, Hamilton, Hancock, Shelby, Johnson, Hendricks and Boone counties.
The following is a break down of some of those calls:
- 290 Crashes
- 31 Crashes with Injuries
- 3 Fatal Crashes
- 259 Abandoned Vehicles
- 100 Slide Offs
- 5 Indiana State Police Cars Struck (no injuries)
