INDIANAPOLIS — Three unmarked graves of Civil War soldiers have been identified and located at Mount Jackson Cemetery.

The graves were found through efforts by Dr. Chris Walker, history professor at Indiana Wesleyan University, and the Wayne Township Trustee's office. The soldiers were part of the Indiana 33rd Infantry during the Civil War.

New headstones have been provided through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

According to the trustee's office, the cemetery, located just north of Washington Street on Tibbs Avenue, was abandoned in the 1960s at which time the Wayne Township Trustee became the cemetery's administrator.

Wayne Township Trustee Chuck Jones said in a news release that a dedication ceremony to set the new headstones of the soldiers will be held at 10 a.m. Sept. 2.
