TIPTON, Ind. – The Tipton community may lose its only grocery store if Marsh cannot find a buyer soon.
With only about 5,000 people, those living in Tipton rely on the Marsh located on Jefferson Street to buy fresh produce and essential home items. If the company closes its doors, shoppers will be forced to utilize the next closest grocery store in Noblesville or Kokomo.
"There are a lot of elderly people in Tipton that don't have cars,” said Janis Piel who shops at the grocer often.
Tipton Chamber of Commerce President Kegan Schmicker plans to develop a plan if the store closes.
"We're assuming it's going to close and now we're trying to develop what strategies can we do to make the transition easier,” said Schmicker.
He is working with community partners to create a system where those in need can submit their shopping list to a group of volunteers who will purchase the items and deliver them to neighbors.
Organizers of the initiative said several people from church groups have already volunteered to help run errands.
