TIPTON, Ind. – Firefighters from Tipton helped repair a broken wheelchair ramp for a 9-year-old who suffers from a disease that provides him with limited movement.
According to the Kokomo Tribune, Alexander Davis was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy - a genetic disease impacting nerve cells in the spinal cord.
His broken ramp prevented him from enjoying the outdoors and doing simple activities outside of his home – like visiting one of his favorite places, Chuck E. Cheese’s.
Davis’ mother, Anastasia, said she didn’t want to risk her son sliding off the ramp, so often when it rained, they would stay indoors.
Once the Tipton Fire Department heard of Davis’ need, they agreed to rebuild the ramp.
Over $1,300 was raised by a local Zumba group to help fund the building materials for Davis’ ramp.
“Nothing stops this kid,” firefighter Jeffery Ogden told the Kokomo Tribune. “He’s always in a great mood. We’re very excited, very happy to help him out.”
